TechPoint’s Mira awards program is a critical function of growing entrepreneurship and advancing Indiana’s tech sector, because identifying excellence and innovation is essential to sparking more growth.
The judges split the IT Company of the Year award into two awards this year, recognizing IT companies with fewer than 100 employees, and creating a new category called “Emerging IT Company of the year. Eight-year-old product recommendation and personalized shopping experience software provider iGoDigital took home Emerging IT Company of the Year honors for its significant revenue and employment growth, as well as its rise to prominence in its product category.

IVM, Inc. won the Innovation of the Year Mira Award for its vending and distribution solutions technology that allows its clients to contain costs and manage distribution of consumable supplies to their employees.
Raidious won the Mira award for New Media Excellence & Innovation for creating the Social Media Command Center that was an integral part of an unprecedented interactive effort by the 2012 Indianapolis Host Committee for Super Bowl XLVI.

Two education category awards highlighted an institution and an individual who are helping to shape Indiana’s next generation of technologists and entrepreneurs. The Technology in Education Excellence & Innovation – Team, Department or Program went to Courseload, the leading device, and content sourceneutral aggregator and distributor of digital textbooks and course materials

Dr. Ali Jafari, Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI, received the Technology in Education Excellence & Innovation – Individual award for his contributions to revolutionizing education through technology. Seven of Dr. Jafari’s innovations have been licensed or commercialized to date.

Michael Langellier, Chief Evangelist & VP Business Development for MoneyDesktop – the new parent company of Langellier’s startup MyJibe – received the TechPoint Young Professional of the Year Mira Award, which recognizes an individual under 30 years old who demonstrates excellence in her or his professional tech sector position as well as contributes to the industry and society in positive ways outside of her or his career. Finalists in seven different technology categories will deliver presentations and answer questions during interviews with independent judging panels later this week.

This year’s Mira Awards finalists criss-cross the marketplace from established corporations and preeminent research institutions to fledgling startups, and from creative agencies to high-tech laboratories and emerging technologies.

The winner in each category will be revealed at a black-tie, “Oscars-style” award ceremony being held Saturday, May 12, at the JW Marriott Indianapolis. TechPoint Mira Awards recognize excellence and innovation through the achievement of Indiana’s outstanding technology industry performers and contributors, and focuses attention on the broader issue of the important role technology plays in Indiana’s economy.

“Narrowing down the field to finalists was particularly difficult for the Mira Award judges this year because we had nearly double the number of nominees in just about every category,” said Jim Jay, president and CEO of TechPoint. “This is the largest class of nominees and finalists that we have had in the 13 years that TechPoint has been conducting the Mira Awards, and I think that says a great deal about the strength and resilience of Indiana’s tech sector.”

In addition to the seven competitive Mira Award categories, three special industry recognitions – TechPoint Foundation for Youth BridgeBuilder Award, TechPoint Young Professional of the Year, and TechPoint Trailblazer in Technology Award – are selected by the TechPoint Foundation for Youth and TechPoint boards of directors respectively.

According to TechPoint President and CEO Jim Jay, the Mira Awards grew by more than 50 percent this year, besting its previous record for a total of 122 Mira Awards nominees.

TechPoint Mira Awards recognize excellence and innovation through the achievement of Indiana’s outstanding technology industry performers and contributors, and focuses attention on the broader issue of the important role technology plays in Indiana’s economy.

Independent Mira Award judges evaluate and score each submitted nomination, and the scoring determines which nominees become finalists. Finalists will be announced by March 12. Mira Award finalists will deliver presentations and answer questions in-person to one of seven panels of judges.

The 2012 Mira Award winners will be announced at a black-tie, “Oscars-style” award ceremony being held Saturday, May 12, at the JW Marriott Indianapolis.
“I am not all that surprised by this year’s record-smashing number of nominees,” Jim Jay said. “The tech sector has been a bright spot in our economy throughout the recession, and recent national exposure for cutting edge, innovative Indiana tech firms has really energized the community. I think we’re on the threshold of another great technological growth spurt in Indiana.

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — IVM, Inc., supplier of automated vending machines, announced plans today to apply for a GSA Schedule 874V and actively pursue federal contracts. Government officials utilize GSA Schedules as a means of procuring goods and services knowing that companies on these schedules have been qualified by the General Services Administration (GSA). IVM cited the fiscal restraints placed on federal agencies’ budgets and their ability to assist them with controlling the distribution of products as their primary motivation in seeking a GSA Schedule contract.

“For a small business, the opportunity to service federal agencies and help them take control of some of their costs opens up significantly more markets throughout the country,” states Michael Pitts, President at IVM, Inc. He continues, “Getting our company on a GSA schedule will expand our reach beyond the federal level to numerous state and municipal governments and other public entities as they will be able to take advantage of our supply vending products at set government pricing.”

IVM practices “The Technology of Total Control”. In addition to worldwide vending management and revenue enhancement services, their automated supply distribution services are growing exponentially. This division allows businesses and manufacturers to provide their employees with supplies, free of charge, while maintaining cost and usage controls on those products. Automated supplies range from safety glasses to drill bits to office supplies. IVM’s specialized distribution equipment remotely tracks disbursement, allowing clients to control usage abuses and cut supply costs. IVM’s advanced vending technology has been deployed to the campuses of Facebook, Logitech, Google, and HP and to notable manufacturers including GE, Goodyear, Owens Corning, Pepsi Americas, BNSF
Railway and Toyota.

About IVM, Inc.:

IVM continues to make inroads into technology firms with the addition of Logitech to their portfolio of clients. Logitech is using IVM’s supply distribution vending machines to dispense keyboards, laptop batteries, headsets and other equipment. Instead of filling out requisition forms the employees simply swipe their employee ID badge and the machine dispenses the product.

Lancaster, vice president of business products for Logitech stated in a Business Week article on the machines “We originally got the idea from Facebook when we were visiting their corporate offices in Silicon Valley.” IVM also provides the machines for Facebook, you can see the CNN/Money story on Facebook supply vending machines here.

IVM supply distribution systems do more than just dispense IT and office supplies they are in use in many industries dispensing personal projection equipment (PPE), gloves, tools, clothing, medical supplies. IVM utilizes tool crib machines, and vending lockers for items to large to fit in their supply vending machines.

More and more vending machine companies are swapping out cookies and candy for granola bars and rice cakes. The changes are driven by consumer demand and regulations in the case of schools.

Dr. Paul Simon, director of the division of chronic disease and injury prevention at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated in a Los Angles Times article: “People don’t get a lot of their calories from vending machines, so the impact will be very limited,” Nonetheless, he adds, “I think it’s a move in the right direction.”

Schools are also moving towards healthy vending. Schools have banned sodas, restricted sales of sweetened sports drinks and revised nutritional guidelines. Some schools restrict the type of products that can be sold in the buildings, and at events.

Actions such as these have prompted some vending machine companies to launch healthy vending programs. You now find fruit, granola, yogurt and natural foods alongside typical vending machine snacks. Some vendors mark healthy items with stickers to highlight healthy options, others put them at eye level. Providing the healthy options does not always lead to sales. Even when machines are stocked with healthy options, such as nuts, seeds and yogurt, processed foods still sell more. But the demand for healthy alternative is growing.
